Custom Pellet grill/smoker

Post by 300 Whisper » December 26th, 2014, 9:28 pm

Hello newbie here looking at building a pellet grill/smoker out of a old pressure tank the size is 70 inches long and 23 inches in diameter looking at using Pellet Pro hopper and was wondering what length auger should I use and will I have to use 2 for that size of grill? Any help will be great. Will post PIC as work begins.

:welcome: I don't know much about pellet burners but the factory units I've looked at were all about 36'' long so I'm not sure if 1 pellet burner will heat a horizontal tank that size. I'm sure someone with more knowledge about pellet burners will come along and help you out soon.

1 burner would be iffy. I have seen several builds where they have used 2 18 inch pellet hoppers. Actually just looked at one in person the other day. I was at feldmans farm store. It was about 5 feet long and about 20 something dia. Hoppers were mounted from the front on that one.

Personally I think you need 2.

Thanks guys, I also emailed Dennis at Smoke Daddy he said what I figured one would work for just smoking but would need two for using it as a grill. He gave me his number to call for any help also.

Re: Custom Pellet grill/smoker NEW THOUGHT

Post by 300 Whisper » December 27th, 2014, 5:45 pm

After cutting the door in the tank I thought to keep the cost down I would put a removable divider in it and use half as a grill and remove the divide and then have the whole thing for a smoker instead of having a 72" grill that would never get full use. Any thoughts on this idea.

Is there a compromise in performance when using the smoker as dual purpose?

Here are some pics of the build I am working on. The divider has been removed and will be building a different one. The grate bracket in mounted and the hopper mount tacked in place. Still have to order the pellet pro hopper hopefully in the next day or two.
