Cylinder End Cap Weld

Post by Canadian Mike » May 21st, 2020, 7:46 am

Morning All,

If this has been covered elsewhere, please feel free to let me know.

What is the best practice for welding the end caps onto the cylinder? For the firebox, we're planning to use a half-open corner joint on the outside and fully weld the inside.

The cylinder is 24.5" OD and 1/4" plate. Does it make sense to use 24.25" diameter end plates to leave an 1/8" landing for the weld? Is anyone welding the inside seam (or tack) as well?

Cheers,

Yes. 1/8" landing is the right idea. You'll get a stronger weld than a straight butt joint.
What do you mean by "is anyone welding the inside seam?"

Sorry for the confusion. I was asking if anyone welds the end caps from both the outside and inside of the cook chamber. I know most people do this for the firebox because of the heat cycling, but wasn't sure if the cook chamber needed the same.

Thanks,

Not necessary if you get a good weld on the outside. Up to you. If they are visible then you can do it for cosmetic reasons.

I didn't weld the inside of my square firebox at all.
