Vertical Cabinet Build

Post by aldaeron » April 9th, 2019, 10:05 pm

Hi All,

Been a while since I last posted and I am a bit overdue to show progress. Thanks again to all who answered questions and gave advice - you are the best! This is a 14 ga inner 16 ga outer vertical cabinet with a 11 ga firebox of my own design. There is 1" thick ceramic blanket kiln insulation between the inner and outer sheets.

Over Christmas break I finally finished the design in CAD.

I ordered metal and it arrived mid-January.

Work travel and everyone in the house getting sick meant I did not get all my tooling and time until early March. After a LOT of clamping (will have to dig out pics later) and some practice I am pretty dialed in a welding 16 gauge. Not a pro- but making good welds with good penetration. A little grinding makes it all look a lot better. In the first long day I had most of the frame started.

After a second long day I have some of the inner sheets tacked

Welding again Friday and hope to have most of it tacked together. As pieces get put in it has started going faster and faster. I'll keep you posted but I hope to have it done before father's day (still a few handles and such to order)

Looks like great progress. Starting is always the hardest part but it gets a bit easier once it starts to take shape.

Put in the stiffening ribs to keep the sheets from warping

Forgot to post my first stitch weld! The ribs really helping keep it from warping. 28 inches long. 16 ga sheet onto 16 ga tubing. Came out great the first time!!!

Chimney is on! Spring is finally starting in Denver and finding free time is less easy ...

Hoping for more time this weekend.

Slowing down is ok but the second you stick it in the corner it will be forgotten.....keep at it

Yep, coming along nicely :kewl:
