Re: Hutch's Mack build
Thank you! It's finally starting to look like something lol! Honestly though, this smoker goes together so fast it hardly ever doesn't look like something lol!Dirtytires wrote:Great progress...starting to see the light at the end at this point....
So today's progress. Got the door latches all done. Finished up some loose ends on the firebox door. Since the lift is most likely not gonna be up and going this week Im gonna try and get racks and rack guides done tommorow, and Thursday if necessary. The metal pipe is getting very small, I'm getting pretty excited! Won't be long and it will be time for the first fire!!
Not much for pics today but here's what I got.

Re: Hutch's Mack build
Thank you! I love these latches! So cool when you get them figured out! Against the instructions I didn't have the required 3 beers first, actually only had half a cup of coffee lol! Only had one issue. Last latch, the firebox, I had it all but done and was gonna weld the handle on level with the latch locked and didn't see that it had turned to the open spot. 10minutes of grinding later and it was back straight again lol!Tom_Heath wrote:Looking pretty darn spiffy man. Well sir, if it can be put on wrong we have done it.
Try thinking about a rig with doors on both sides of the cook chamber, that was a whopper of a deal.

Wow I bet!! What kills me is I was being so careful to make sure it was all lined up right and level, not sure how it moved lol! Oh well, can't tell now.Tom_Heath wrote:Well sir, if it can be put on wrong we have done it.

Re: Hutch's Mack build
I hate building racks....so repetitive!
Ran out of time and welding wire so this is all the further I got today. May try to sneak out this evening when everyone goes to bed. Gonna go put up a wheelchair ramp for our men's ministry tommorow and my wife has a mile long list of stuff I've been neglecting throughout this project so I doubt I will get back to this until next week.
Pictures as usual.

Couldn't stand being so close and not finishing up. Went back out after church and worked til almost midnight. There's still a few small loose ends to tie up but other than the trailer this thing is 99% complete.
And as expected, pics. Well just 1 tonight.

Hopefully in a couple weeks.Chromeski wrote:Looks great! What time is dinner?
Been off all week and got some prep work done on the trailer but I'm at a standstill until the lift parts come in. Hopefully when we get home from church theres a package from brown santa waiting.
Not much of a picture but all I have to show for this week. Had some metal to remove but now it's ready to set on for the most part.

Re: Hutch's Mack build
Got sick of waiting on UPS. Rigged the lift back together and it's working better than ever.
So mounted it and was concerned with it being too heavy to the driver side, and the firebox is gonna look weird.
After a quick conversation with my Dad we both agreed that it would be better to move it over a bit and sure enough it not only looks better but it's easy to get to the racks still and I feel much more comfortable able it. Next step is to finish the floor, then log rack. It's really getting close!!
Also. I'm sure someone will mention it. My height is just under the width of the trailer so I think I'm ok there. Also gonna shorten the tongue and add some reinforcement as well. All in due time...

Re: Hutch's Mack build
Not much progress as of late. Got it mounted on trailer a while back, and a little bit of the trailer deck done. Kids are on spring break on my 8 days off so not getting any work done this week. Going to go pick up a Rick of hickory as soon as my daughter gets out of dance class.
Seeing as how I'm pretty much done with the smoker part I need some advice on seasoning. I need to power wash it to clean all the grinder dust out. Do I need a cleaner with that? After washing my plan was to build a fire and dry it out. Then was going to spray everything down with cooking spray and let it smoke for a few hours. Should it be cooled off before I spray it? Thanks guys!

Re: Hutch's Mack build
Up to you on washing. I used compressed air to blow it out then wiped mine out with a clean shop rag till it was clean. If you do use water-and you definitely can- I would do it on a warm sunny day and fire it up right after to dry it out. My thought was I didn't want to then have to clean out the snook/soot before I oiled it.
On seasoning, again do it on a warm sunny day so the pit is warm. Spray the inside with a vegetable oil spray then wipe it down with a oil-soaked paper town to leave only a thin even coating. Then fire it up and run it as long as you can. Not necessary but I oiled my firebox as well and it has seemed to help prevent rust on the inside walls.

Re: Hutch's Mack build
Yeah that route definitely sounds easier. I would prefer to not clean soot out before seasoning. Sounds like I need to wait a couple weeks until it warms up some too. It's still hit or miss here in Missouri.
Picked up a Rick of hickory today. Bad news is either I forgot to ask or mistook him for a different ad but it is pretty green still. So tell longer I wait the better I suppose. When seasoning time comes I'll probably stuff this thing plumb full of wood to help dry it out for an actual smoke lol!

What's worse is we just got home from Disney world last week. So left here in a snow/slush/rainy mess, drove through a tornado, then enjoyed 85-90 weather only to drive back past a tornado and back into another snow storm. And my allergies have been absolutely horrible for 2 weeks now lol!

The house next door is up for sale. I could use another smoker in the neighborhood!
It's been 70+ here all week---my boy was in the unheated pool yesterday.

In the 70s here this week and less than two hours from Disneyland if Arizona isn't for you. When we have a snowstorm it's usually gone before you wake up.
