Fire Box Orientation

Postby reflynn » October 4th, 2017, 8:08 am

Just a quick question about fire box. My fire box is 20 X 35 X 24... Cooking Chamber is Round 30" X 66". is there any one configuration better than the other as far as how the box is oriented to the Cook Chamber. as far as height..width.. and length goes.

You have to take into consideration the size and location of the throat. A FB this size will cover all of the little things that you would normally have to watch out for no matter which way it's oriented. You have to make sure that the FB isn't too close to the ground if it's on a trailer so it doesn't bottom out and if it's stationary you don't want the racks to be too high or it'll be uncomfortable to cook on. Usually you have to think about how big you wood splits will be and you fire basket and ash pan and most guys like to have some clearance so the flames aren't hitting the top of the FB. I normally make the FB wider than it is tall or deep just for aesthetics. It's really all about the volume of heated air so configuration won't affect performance but it it's the little things that matter.
