-14° Fahrenheit

Postby mp4 » December 27th, 2017, 8:05 pm

I need to make jerky and today looks to be the best weather day of the week....and it's -14° outside. Very little wind though so I figured I should fire up both smokers. :-)

Image

I had 50 lbs of ground venison and 5 lbs of elk strips for jerky and my brother-in-law had 25 lbs of ground venison for a grand total of 80 lbs for the big smoker.

I have a pork butt and 8 chickens in the mini which has been plugging along all day long like a champ.

Too much is just right!

Smoke some cheese and salt. Great weather for cold smoking

I know that mini doesn't even know it's cold outside because of the insulation. That big boy knows it though, good timing shouldn't be too hard to keep 155* in that rig in that weather.

The mini did great - it just needed a little more recovery time when I opened it up for loading. I had some mesquite that I burned under the fire grate that helped out some too...at least it seemed to loose some ground when the chunks of it were used up. I think I burned 4 chunks of it in 13 hours.

I forgot to turn off my iGrill and this is what I saw this morning when I rolled my mini back into the shop.

Do you suppose they planned on their grill thermometers reading negative temps?Image

It does get down to -5 degC some winter morning & I tell you I can't stand it, I hate the cold soooooo much. :hissy: I miss living in Queensland, a cold winters day up there is 20 degC, just like Florida or Southern California. :kewl:

Looking good.

Squiggle I just been down to Scone in New South Wales... 43C (around 109F I believe). Good job the beer was cold otherwise I might have succumbed.
