Kingsford Blue Gag (bag)

Post by Clover Ridge Smokers » November 7th, 2014, 12:11 pm

Recently there has been a lot of discussion around Kingsford Blue bag and how over powering and nasty a flavor is can put on your food.

For those of you who are Blue Bag fans, I thought you might like to see what you are cooking with.

Kingsford Charcoal is made from charred softwoods, pine, spruce etc. then mixed with ground coal and other ingredients to make a charcoal briquette.

Wood char
Mineral char
Mineral carbon
Limestone
Starch
Borax
Sodium nitrate
Sawdust

Does it list these elements on the bag like they do on food products? Not really encouraging to think we eating these things and that is after their compositions are changed in a heating process. Like the chemicals the are generated in cigarettes when that smoke is inhaled. More toxic than some individual poisons

Sad thing is, aside from real wood, KBB has undoubtedly produced more world class BBQ than any other charcoal on the market. K-Comp hasn't been around all that long and other brands aren't as widely available.

Softwood charcoal must be a north woods thing, eh? In this part of the world kingsford is made a county over from hardwood (around 85% oak) from local mills and wood char, mineral char, etc.

Are you sure MTF? The information was provided by Kingsford themselves. Maybe it depends on the plant?

Yeah CRS. That's my guess. They probably use what they have regionally. Here them and Royal Oak suck up almost every drop of sawdust, shavings and slabs from every mill around. I have lived in pine, spruce and fir smoke for a few weeks at a time, and if I was getting Blue Bag that smelled like that I would share your opinion. The only complaint I have is that occasionally a bag will smell a little extra "coaly" to a harsh degree, but it mostly burns off.

Not to hijack.... We no longer fly unless it's an extreme emergency. My dad at 97 still says " time to spare, go by air "

I have another 50-60 reasons but ....
