Barrel lid hinges w/grease fitings

Post by yevick » October 4th, 2015, 10:19 am

Newbee here, glad I found you guys. I am glad to be in this group of fellow smokers :grillin: . I have a lot to learn as I am building my first smoke. My question is where do you guys get your food grade grease? And what temp rating do you use? I love the look and ease of the barrel hinges but still have not decided on whether or not that is what I will use. I really dont want to fab anything and dont like the look of the old school household looking hinge. Appreciate any help and thanks for having me.

Welcome to the crew. I haven't used those hinges but since they are on the outside of the cooker, I would think the grease type wouldn't matter.

If I put them om the lid I would think that the grease would drip though the crack on the top of the tank. And the hot firebox just thinking it would draw in the fume of grease heating up. Maybe im wrong. Thanks for the reply Rodcrafter

I have used these. When Ive used them however, none of my smokers have overhead doors. They are vertical. I also place them on so the doors can be lifted off. I know on an overhead, you may not really want this but they really don't leak hot melted grease. My RF firebox door is the hottest and those two hinges were greased 2 1/2 years ago when installed. Either their alignment is perfect or I am not opening it enough, but they are very smooth.

It's also stored outdoors in the rain and snow

Stored in the rain and snow??? What in the world are you thinking? The cars can sit in the weather the garage is for your smokers.

Oh. I wish... Between the barn and this oversized 2 car garage, I barely walk a line through all the "stuff"

Thanks Puff. This is my first smoke. How hot do you think the firebox gets?

I'd bet the steel heats up about 800 or higher. I've have the top of the firebox turn purple and warp upwards. I know it's hot. At least 4 times hotter than the cook chamber but I never measured. I'll say this, any wood I place on top to help warm will ignite within 30 minutes. My firebox is 1/4" and heavily constructed, I'd even added a top support to ward off any more warp. That works and it still does not leak grease.

Thanks. I double walled the sides but the front and back are single wall. Gonna reinforce them when I cut the door. Hope I didnt go too thin with 3/16

I have read that 1/4" firebox is about as light as you may want to go. I've no experience with less than 1/4" so I can't provide any detail.

I believe Gizmo built Egor using 3/16'' plate on everything except the FB door and the BP.

Gizmo said he checks in on us from time to time, but is really busy with family stuff. He hopes it will lighten up after November. I miss him too.

I'm glad you posted that RC, I had pm'ed him quite a few months ago to see how he was. He replied that he was good and would be back. In the last few weeks he's been on my mind frequently. You know when I got here, he spoon fed me lots of ideas and techniques and simply said...pay it forward. Glad to know he's out there checking in.

The components of family are demanding. The more family means to you, the greater the demand. Since pop passed in February, mom has many more needs than I would have thought as a strong 84 yr old. She has a few health issues that we deal with weekly and I find myself going as insane making sure she is OK as I did when my kids were little. I have Doctors addresses, appointment lists, medication lists, grocery lists.

Not that I even have a clue of Gizmos current demand but ....I admire his dedication, he is a committed smokerbuilder and to be away from here must be distressing.
