Well. With the installation of the ash clean out doors, metal fabrication is complete. Will probably be firing it up next week sometime to season it and see how the firebox holds up. If the guys on the other side of our building lets me borrow their forklift to get this thing outside that is.

Thank you much. Moment of truth day. Going to fire up the rotisserie side once it warms up. this could be interesting.

On a different note. Has anyone heard of or used Cerakote on a smoker? It come in black and silver and is rated to 1800. Guess it's a form of ceramic powder coat. It looks like its a firearms coating.

Smokes rollin. Using one oak log and a bag of royal oak charcoal it hit 225 in 25mins and 250 in 28mins. That's pretty much my smoking range. Trying to take it up to 500 to season it. As of yet I haven't gotten any firebox warpage. Fingers crossed. Lol

Thank you. I was surprised how well it worked. Maybe just one cow and one pig for the first cook. Haha. I did end up getting a little pull on the shelf side firebox. Wasn't using that one so that may be why. Going to run a piece of angle across the back to strengthen it. Hopefully that'll fix it.

Looking forward to putting something on it. I'm sure there'll be a learning curve. Never cooked on a rotisserie before.

First Smoker Build, Hybrid Rotisserie and Shelf Smoker

Post by forty_creek » April 12th, 2016, 8:25 pm

I've cooked on a Cadillac Cooker and Southern Pride both were multi-shelf roto. The southern pride was set it and leave it with gas for temp control if you wanted. We didn't use it. We just kept feeding her.
A multi-shelf roto is on my bucket list of smokers.
Strong Work on your build!

Thanks forty_creek. Considering the rig you're building that's quite the compliment.

Czar I do actually plan on making a gathering. They sound like a great time from what I've read. After the smoker is finished I'll be starting work on the 8x20 trailer for it. When that's road worthy you can bet on seeing me at one. This years probably a stretch though. haha

Being that it's only 8hrs away, depending on the date there's a good chance I'll be there. Pulled my other rig (not aerodynamic at all and pulls like a brick $hit house) 15hrs just to put my uncle to shame at a cookoff so 8hrs to meet and hang with some real smoker builders would be a pleasure.

Yea, got tired of him talking smack. Got best in pork and beat him in points in brisket and ribs. Of course I followed him around showing him my trophy the rest of the night. Lol.

Ok, now fabrication is done. Until I think of something else that is. haha Added the angle to strengthen the box. Back wall of the firebox didn't move at all while I was welding the angle on so I think it's good. Also got some round bar and hammered out a couple handles for the ash doors and some hooks for fire tools. Once I get some bulkhead adapters for the shelf side I'll season/test that side. Tried taking the ones from the rotisserie side and that was a no go. They're in there.
