500 gallon smoker

Postby Clos1986 » December 20th, 2017, 9:26 pm

Hey guys thought I’d post something here looking into buying a 500 gallon propane tank. And I think I want to go regular offset instead of reverse flow. However I don’t know if I should use another tank for the fire box or go with a square box style.. I would want to insulate the fire box to make as fuel efficient as possible. Also what size stack do you guys normally run?

Welcome aboard!! Have you found the pit calculator on the home page ? It'll help you figure out all of your dimensions. You can go round or square with the FB, there's no difference in performance but square is easier to work with. On a 500 you'll need a pretty good size stack (8'' or larger) to keep the length of the stack down. You could also run twin stacks to shorten the stacks with dampers on them so you could adjust them if it was drawing too hard.

Welcome to the crew! I also would recommend with this size CC the square FB will be easier to insulate and you can add a cabinet above that FB that can serve as a warmer box here after referred to as WB which can also run hot enough to add as an CC that doesn’t cost you any more fuel, because of its location.

I am currently looking for a trailer for the smoker y’all recommend tandem axle or single? I kinda want to make the pit removable so I can use the trailer for other stuff as well. have any of you guys ever done this?

I made my trailer rig with forklift tubes so I could use it from the ground or from my trailer. But, I found that if I put it on either of my trailers I would have to get on the trailer to use it. I soon found that to be tiring up and down. But since the FB is so low unless I built a trailer just for the smoker it would be too high to stand on the ground and use it loaded.
