I put 2 racks in mine, 1 at 6'' and 1 at 12'' from the top. If I was going to go with 1 rack I would probably go 8'' from the top. I believe that would allow enough room for a large butt although I've never measured one.

Ok. Im just going to stick with one rack for now. If he decides he wants two down the road we can just re-drill for the new rack.

You sure can and if he does, he could put a Weber top on it and the top rack could be right at the top of the drum.
