How I make a dome lid for a open head drum UDS.
Dome lid on the cheap. Place an ad on Craig's list or a classifieds site. The ad should read "looking to buy weber bbq grills in any condition"
You will get people calling you with kettles missing legs, missing grates and handles, etc. I try to offer them $15.00 for these or $40.00 in prime condition.
Top lids are easy to use. In this post I will use a kettle bottom.

You won't be able to get it perfect, but it'll come out pretty clean. Next thing remove the bolts that hold on the air inlets. I like to replace the bolts and make them look nice. then take a grinder and grind the porcelain along the rim down so you can get to the plain metal

Don't grind on it too much. Only grind it long enough to were you see bare metal pop through. The metal on this lip is very very thin so you only want to grind enough to remove porcelain try not to dig into the metal.

I like to remove the leg attachment holders but if your Tom_Heath you can leave them on there and make springy pigs and chickens and stuff hang off of them. I like to use a cutting wheel to get the main part of the holder off and then use a flap disc to remove a little ears that are spot welded on

Using short 1-2 second bursts, stitch weld about every 6" or so. I keep most of the heat on the dome so I don't burn through tree flat lid.

Last thing after we paint is to seal around the welds. Next I put on the handles them paint the lid.

Got the holes drilled for the handles. Hit the bare metal with some primer then wet sand the whole thing with 400 grit and paint it

Re: How I make a dome lid for a open head drum UDS.
Thanks Frank, I'm going to use some of this good stuff to change the lid on my buddies UDS style rig. He made one out of a air tank, the lid is very heavy making it hard for him to use. This should do the trick, I was going to make some counter weighted devise to do the job useing the same parts but I think this is nicer.

Thanks RodCrafter! Is the lid on your buddies rig hinged? I have been looking for some ideas for a good spring loaded hinge design for heavy round lids.

Re: How I make a dome lid for a open head drum UDS.
No, that's the problem it isn't he has to lift it on and off. I think I could square it off using some angle iron to put hinges on it. But he has a piece of flat plate he rolled and put on the inside to make it more sealed, so the lid has to go straight down. So of course the hinges would have to get pretty involved to make that happen. It looks like your plan is best.

Re: How I make a dome lid for a open head drum UDS.
That's too funny Frank,
That is almost exactly what I was goint to do with the lid on my buddy's cooker. I had already told him the details base, post, lever and swivel. But I thought it was a bit much, for him to have to move around from time to time. He said "your the rigger", so I thought I would do a little.
But I still like the weber idea better.
