advise for custom pellet smoker

Post by ajstrider » December 8th, 2012, 11:19 am

So I just purchased pellet hopper/auger/firebox assemble with hopes of building a vertical style pellet smoker. One thing I am unsure of is how big of space are these things good to heat up? I am assuming yours has no problems mainting temperature at under 300F? And what is the actual size of the smoker so I can figure up the volume, please.

Is your drive unit a Traeger?

I just did some measurements on what I've got here - which are all Model #055 Junior Traeger drives.

Original Traeger Junior #55 - 8844
Easybake conversion - 10582 (17% increase)
Edna (vertical) - 15840 (44% increase)
Smokin Johnny (horizontal) - 16084 (48% increase)

I think Edna was at the limit of the drive unit. I was surprised and pleased with the Smokin Johnny. Being slightly larger than Edna but still performing very well We dialed in the "High" setting and it went to 425 in about 15 minutes the first day to cook a pizza.

If you insulated the walls I think you could push these numbers a little
Since Frank is the one that's insulated his, he'll have to answer that one.

Hope this helps... :D

Yes that does help, no I do not have a Traeger, I have the Pellet Pro from Smoke Daddy. It appears that everything is the same as far as parts goes, just a slightly different controller. So I would imagine the output is the same. It came with an 18" auger length and I am just trying to come up with a good design for a vertical box. I appreciate your time, thanks.

aj have you considered making a simple rectangular cabinet with double front doors like a refrigerator/freezer? - i.e. large top (main) door and smaller bottom door. Some advantages to that layout.

Anyway - you have another thread we should prolly discuss this on ...

I think I've seen the Pellet Pro from Smoke Daddy but maybe post some pics or link if you have some? :D

Thanks for making this its own thread, I will post some pictures when I get home from work this afternoon. I was thinking of making a rectangle box with a single door at the moment but I'm not really a fabricator so I am looking at either learning to do some welding from the guys at work or have one of them do the fabricating.

Alright here is my photo of my unit, like I said, it is pretty much a copy of my Traeger except for the controller, but it seems to operate the same, just not a knob.

Yes, this one is 18" auger, you can also get a 12" auger. Not sure on rpm motor, I will have to check on that for you.

Due to my lack of fabricating skills and free access to brand new, unlined 55 gallon drums I am thinking of building a PUDS, pellet ugly drum smoker. Just put a heat deflector a couple inches above the firepot and two grill grates maybe.

I LOVE IT!

Is the drive unit a digital w/probe?

You could lay it on it's side with legs and set the auger in to end-feed - with a large single door but lower the grate a little below center.

Yeah it has an RTD connected to it, this thing is exactly like my Traeger. Parts look interchangeable. I was really wanting to turn this into a vertical smoker I think.

I was just throwing out cabinet ideas cause .... well ... THAT'S WHAT I DO! ... that's all I got .... :D

I did hear once there was one goo-ole-boy that started with traeger years back and split off to build his own unit but I'd not heard any more - maybe this is him - if they're that similar....

There are Traeger knockoffs popping up everywhere anymore....
another one is called Royal I think. Looks absolutely identical
