New Project and Traeger Controller Question

Post by Ken8 » July 27th, 2013, 4:50 pm

Hello. This is my first post (Sorry its a long one too). I'm hoping that you guys have some answers for my questions or at least know where to go look. I couldn't find anything related when searching the forum. I contacted Traeger and they couldn't/wouldn't help me. I don't believe that they don't have the schematics (as I was told) - its their module, they should just tell me they can't give them to me due to liability/other issues - I would completely understand in that case.

I purchased a Traeger pellet smoker about 2 yrs ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it (I'm a first time smoker). One of the great things about the pellet smokers is the set it and forget feature provided by the digital controller. I'm trying to take it one step further to automating it as much as possible aside from having to physically handle the meat in/out. On weekdays or weekends sometimes I want to smoke but also have other commitments that kind of get in the way. My goal is to be able to load the meat and cycle the settings from smoke to other temp settings until a certain meat temp is achieved. A basic cycle would be:

-Smoke for 5 hrs
-Set to 225F
-Monitor meat temp until 185F
-Stop smoker
-send email/txt to me that its done

I have everything I need for now to move forward except a better understanding of the temperature control knob on the front panel. I need to know how this control knob is connected to the microcontroller that is on the circuit board - I have a pretty good guess of how it is connected but I would like to be sure before starting to make permanent mods.

Does anyone have a schematic or prior experience with the Traeger digital controller? This would be the best solution as then I could really be confident of my intended control circuit.

Or as a minimum does anyone know if the knob controls a digital signal either pulled high or low for the setting? I assume this is the case as there is a microcontroller on the circuit board when I took it apart.

For those interested here is my current setup:
-K type thermo couple for the meat sensor
-Netduino microcontroller for meat temp reading, controlling the temp knob, and communicating to a Raspberry pi
-Raspberry pi for running the smoker sequence and network aspects of email/txt
-analog mux controlled by the Netduino to act as the switch to select different temps (pending knowing how the switch is connected)

I intend to leave the temp control loop to the Traeger controller as that seems to work fairly well - just need a means to switch the knob.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Ken

Beats the heck out of me. Way to techno for me, but I am intrigued by your goal. If Frank Cox doesn't respond, maybe pm him or Gizmo Rick, they both have a pretty good knowledge of a Traeger.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!

:welcome:

Yep that is too much for me, I would say you could just ask someone to baby sit your smoker for you. hehe That is my level of tech, good luck.

My wife's the same way - she just nods "uh-huh..." when I talk about what I'm working on next. Electronics I can handle - its the welding part I see on this forum that fascinates/amazes/scares me haha. Hopefully someone has the info I'm looking for - if not I will have to cross my fingers and hope I don't miss anything when I break out my Digital Multimeter, tear open the controller and make some measurements.

I'll check back again in a day or so.

I've built several Traeger driven cookers but I've never torn down a control board.
I'm really gonna watch this thread for sure!

Sorry I can't help with that.

I'm pretty sure it will void the warranty….. just sayin' :D

Your post has peaked lots of interest. I also think you need to contact Frank Cox and see if he has the answers you are looking for.

Does anyone know if the Ortech controller (ebay TR100) is the same as the Traeger BAC236? They imply it is. I need to buy another one to hack.

I PM Frank_cox for more info.

If you need Tylenol for that, you better avoid Frank. =))

Hey folks - thanks for the comments and guidance. I found some more detailed information on Pelletheads.com Seems all they talk about is pellet smokers and grills.

I'm going to move the discussion over there. I'll touch base back here once I make some progress. The plan for now is to redo the original controller using the Netduino microcontroller - this seems easy enough and will save me the headache of hacking the original controller and make it easier to integrate the entire system.

Get back with you guys soon.
